Day 1

San Francisco -> New York

Disney's Electric Light Parade on Fifth Ave. in NYC.

Today is the first day of our trip, and our first day in New York. The flight to New York was, for the most part, uneventful. Out flight attendant was rather snooty, constantly checking her watch and asking us impatiently "Are you done??". Needless to say, we spent as much time as possible slowly nibbling on our food...

We accidentally hopped in to two taxis, paying double fare for the trip from the Airport to the hotel.

6:00 - Discover the Electric Light Parade from Disneyland is here in New York, and will start on Park Ave. at 9:00pm
8:10 - Leave on foot for Park Ave.
8:12 - Join the hordes of tourists and other onlookers. The police block off adjoining streets, so one would have to walk several blocks down and make a right around the block to get to the parade street.
8:13 - Passerby tells us there is no space at all. "Suuure," we say and trek on...
8:15 - John decides that to get through the police barricade, we must sneak through the Warwick hotel.
8:16 - Much profanity is addressed in John's general direction
8:17 - We go up one floor of the Warwick, and back down on the same elevator. We leave through the side door that lets us out on a street intersecting with Park Ave.
8:20 - Arrive at Park Avenue. Where cars would normally be parked on the street is completely filled with people. Police barricades cut that area from the sidewalk behind it.
8:21 - We hold our position at a scaffolding by the street
9:00 - A local radio station gives away junk. None of us get any.
9:20 - The 'Starting Lineup' is announced. Various Olympians from various countries are apparently present.
9:21 - The insanity begins. From now until the end of the parade, an annoying sequence of 'Electric Light Parade' music is repeated non-stop every 30 seconds.
9:30 - The starting lineup passes us on the float pictured above
9:45 - A mother and two small children work their way in next to Mike on the scaffolding. One kid stands on Mike's hands while the other shoves him on the the lap of the people next to him.
9:50 - One of the kids has one of those glowing necklaces, gets hungry, and takes a bite. Her mouth is soon glowing neon green and she turns in to a monstrous beast. Too bad we didn't get a picture...
9:32 to 10:00 - Several bands pass us by. None have lights.
10:03 - The Parade starts. Finally. One float had no lights working, and was bood by ticked off people. The last float was 8-% un-lit.

Don't go to New York parades.
