Day 12

Singapore

One of many can-recycling slot machines found along Orchard Road. Giant aquarium at the lower level of Wisma Atria, one of many shopping malls along Orchard Road. You'd have to take a whiff of an actual Durian to know why these signs appear at the entrances to hotels, subways, and the like. Too many subway rides.

We've switched hotels to be closer to the action - moving to the Marriott on Orchard Road. It's a little bit of a hassle to switch hotels for one day but well worth it. We have two of the most beautiful rooms we've ever stayed in -decorated with Chinese furniture and featuring state-of-the-art electrical service in the rooms. Outside, a waterfall cascades over the marble block entryway. A truly luxurious hotel and we'd recommend it highly; price was reasonable, too.

We're able to get a table at the Hard Rock Cafe, and the kids add to their Hard Rock tee-shirt collection. By now it looks as if they're employees of the place...

In the evening, we venture out looking for Raffles Hotel, a famous local landmark, and we find it eventually. We head to Chinatown for dinner and find a variety of interesting small places. Settling on one outdoor restaurant, we have a most unusual dinner - good food, although small portions. John really wants to order a steamed fish, and so he does. A few minutes later, the waitress brings a small plastic bucket to our table. "Is this one OK?" she asks. I turn to look at what she has and it jumps up! The steamed fish, in its yet-unsteamed state! So we all have a good laugh ... until the bill comes and we find the steamed fish cost approximately 36 US dollars! Yikes!! Well, it was an experience, right?
