Day 14

Japan

We order lunch by taking a digital picture of the plastic food in the window and showing it to the waiter. So glad to learn that the Imperial Park is closed and we can go look for dinner instead. Hard Rock Fajitas.

We've essentially skipped breakfast and make it out of the hotel about noon. We head for the World Trade Center which is nearby and has about 40 shops and restaurants in its basement, including a lot of restaurants with plastic models of food in the window. John uses the digital camera to take photos of what we want to order, in case there's no English menu! There isn't one but we show the amused waiter our pictures and get a very good lunch.

We head for the Ginza district and find a delightful toy store or "toy park" loaded with thousands of very unique and clever toys. The girls want to spend the afternoon there, but we head on to the Sony Center and see the latest in equipment there, plus watch a movie.

Then we are off in search of the Imperial Palace, which, it turns out, is closed by the time we get near. So John figures out the subway system and we go to the Rappongi district to the Hard Rock for another dinner and tee-shirt. (This way, we didn't have to pack too many clothes...) The Rappongi is full of people, a sea of humanity at every street corner and on every narrow sidewalk. The evening lights are great, a lot like New York or London's Piccadilly. We buy some pastries to eat for breakfast the next day and head back to the hotel.
