Four of us after hiking up to the footbridge overlooking the famous castle at Neuschwanstein. | The kids and the Bavarian grampa who tends the footbridge. |
We've planned to check out of our Munich hotel and head to Fussen, in the Bavarian Alps, to hike up the trail to King Ludwig's castle at Neuschwanstein, a favorite jaunt. The weather is uncertain today but we make the drive anyway and check into our Fussen hotel, which is a beautiful resort hotel on the Foggensee, a placid mountain lake. The rooms have balconies with tables and chairs and a spectacular view of the mountain lake.
It stays light until about 9 or 9:30 p.m. here so we decide to take the hike in the late afternoon, not trusting tomorrow's weather. The day is beautiful and we are again thrilled at the experience of Neuschwanstein castle, its high bridge and its sparking clear mountain water. We get slightly lost coming down by an unfamiliar trail and slip slide through some wet, leaf-covered paths but make it OK and then hunt for a restaurant for dinner (a nightly ritual). We find a Croatian place in Fussen and order a variety of foods, from spaghetti to Paprika Schnitzel.
